- Tulum was the major port for the Coba pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Formerly called Zama, City of Dawn (it faces the sunrise). An important trade hub, especially for obsidian.
- First mentioned by Juan Díaz, a member of Spanish expedition of 1518.
- Tulum was occupied from around AD 1200 till the beginning of the 16th century.
- The ruins of Tulum are situated along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.
